Food not Lawns

I had a great conversation today with Heather Flores, permaculture expert and author of Food Not Lawns: how to turn your yard into a garden and your neighborhood into a community. She was giving me some great ideas for creating a sustainable edible landscape, but also some ideas on creativity and connectiveness within my community. When she created the book she realised that it needed to be more than just a garden book, so she wrote a permaculture “beginner’s lifestyle manual” to suggest lots of ways to simplify your life.
Her thoughts? Stop thinking that sustainable means going it alone. Connect with your neighbors, build relationships and re-think some of the ways you do things in the home. Her biggest idea? Get rid of your refrigerator. Heather says that 60 percent of refrigerated food spoils because we buy too much. Buy less and more often. Your food will be fresher, healthier, and tastier.
She also advocates that I chuck my truck. Let’s say I will start small and build on my successes.

Good idea! Always liked the concept of an edible garden or one thats entirely composed of native plants.
